The illusion of health and diets

You know how when you buy a new car, or are in the process of buying a new car…all of sudden, you see that same car everywhere?  That type of car has always been around you…you just haven’t noticed it…but now, since you’re aware…they’re everywhere!

This morning I went to my favorite diner for breakfast. Well, I guess today, I lost my sensitization to the people I see daily in my practice for weight loss strategies and started really paying attention to my surroundings.  There are really a lot of overweight people out there….some so grossly overweight that I honestly couldn’t believe that they haven’t dropped dead yet.  I just couldn’t help stop thinking about why they are the way they are.  In my practice I talk to them…usually they may be genetically predisposed to weight, others may have an eating disorder, but I firmly believe that both are controllable.  And, if it’s controllable for them…imagine those of us who don’t have issues like they do, what we can do to drop those extra pounds that we want.

I asked my server at the diner if they were putting anything special into the foods that they were serving that would cause everyone to be so heavy.  He looked at me and laughed and said, “they’re not like you….you didn’t order the bread or potatoes”.   And that’s exactly it!

Let’s not even talk about potatoes here…let’s just focus on bread.  Now, I’m not going to go into a long dissertation about bread…it will be short….but if you want the long explanation, it’s out there.

Bread.  It’s a grain.  Whole wheat, multi, oat, rye…….it doesn’t matter what kind it is, where you buy it, or how you consume it….it’s going to have the same physiological (I’ll try not to get to medically wordy) effect on everyones body. The effect is, that once digested, it all turns into sugar.  FACT.  Now, another fact…not opinion.  Sugar turns into FAT in your body.  The biochemical mechanism for this is very simple, and it’s all about your body trying to rid itself of sugar.  It does this by releasing insulin to get it out of your blood stream.  Why?  Because it doesn’t belong there!  Left there for too long of a time causes disease. So, our bodies are very efficient in ridding ourselves of the equivalent of nuclear waste and dumping it in our bellies and behinds (not to mention on our internal organs also…how many of you knew that)?  Again, another physiological FACT.

Let’s review: Grain = sugar = insulin release = fat storage.

There. In just one sentence I’ve written the only and best diet information needed on earth.  You can now throw out all of those diet books you’ve read.

Back to the illusion of health and diets. So, you go into a decent restaurant and they label their menu offerings as “heart healthy” which makes you think that these foods are good for you and if they’re good for you, they should not cause you to gain weight!  I’m right?  Am I not?  ( This would be a good time to read my prior blog which was about why you believe that what you’re hearing/reading as the truth about food/nutrition may not be so).  Case and point.  What is every breakfast menu comprised of?  Of course eggs and bacon (but you’re told to stay away from that…another blog yet to be written), so the bulk of the menu items are pancakes, cereals, waffles, crepes, scrambles w/ hash browns, toast…you get it.  So, if all of these offerings are turning into sugar in our bodies and turning into fat, why do we eat them?

Here’s my answer.  Arrogance!

As American citizens,  we are arrogant!  I use arrogant in the context of superiority.  We actually think that we know what is good for ourselves in a nutritional context.   Let’s not forget that we are just animals…sorry!  Animals have a limited choice of foods that they are able to consume to afford health and weight management.  There are no obese animals in nature, except humans and animals fed a human western diet.  As humans, we are only meant to eat both animal and vegetable…that’s it.  Throw into the mix all the foods you find either at the grocery store or at most restaurants and do you really think we’re able to assimilate those foods that nature didn’t intend us to consume?

Again, let’s review:  any food that is not animal/vegetable = ill health = obesity

There. I have just again in one sentence written the only and best health prevention information needed on earth.  You can now throw out all of those other books you’ve read on how to stay healthy.

Now, we really want to believe that if this stuff we’re eating were bad for us, someone would of course have told us not to eat it?  No!  Where does the food money that you spend go to in this country?  Is it the beef industry and vegetable industry? No.  Is it the processed foods and companies that are producing everything else that you buy that isn’t meat and vegetables?  Yes!  And how do they get you to believe that what you shouldn’t be eating that’s making you sick and fat is good for you?  They tell you on TV. They tell you on the radio.  They have you reading it in magazines.  It’s called advertising and marketing. And they all do a fabulous job of keeping us sick and fat.

And it’s your local “healthy grocery store”.  They are the worst!  I push my cart around these stores like everyone else. You don’t have to look at labels when food is on these “healthy store” shelves, because it’s implied that it’s “healthy”!  More arrogance on their part. They are marketing to you the illusion of health because of the name of the their store.  So, let’s look at what is actually in these stores.  Let’s see.  There’s a bakery section….that’s all wheat and flour products (fat). There’s the store pizza section (all wheat/grain crust = fat). There’s the dairy section (more sugar = fat).  Do you see that yet?  You’re spending more money for products that you think are healthier for you, but you’re really just eating/buying the same crap you could get at a gas station mini-mart!

So what are you supposed to do?  Well how about thinking about yourself and your family and their health and weight for once.  Illusion of a healthy breakfast – OJ, toast and cereal Kashi whole grains…special K). Sugar, sugar and more sugar. Lunch – whole wheat bread, peanut butter and jelly and Gatorade.  Sugar, sugar and more sugar. Dinner – whole wheat pasta, potatoes and Vitamin water.  Sugar, sugar and more sugar.  There you have it. You are making yourself fat all day eating what you have been brainwashed to think is healthy, cause you bought it all at a fancy grocery or are eating it at a fancy restaurant.

Do any of these places really care about your health and weight?  Or do they just want your paycheck?  Hmmmmmm.
